The Benefits of Group Music Classes

Updated: Apr 12

Rock band, Marching Band, group piano? Why does it matter?

When you first enter a music program, it can be very overwhelming. You have private lessons, band, jazz, masterclasses, and even kazoo jam. There's so many options out there and it seems repetitive to sign up to a group and private lessons but like anything else, skill building requires a multidisciplinary approach. We are here to give you some reasons on why group classes are a crucial addition to private lessons.

What are group programs?

Unlike private lessons or private instruction, group music classes are classes where the several students to teacher and the topics tend to be broader than a one-on-one session. In music, there are different forms of group classes like ensemble courses that require a consistent commitment versus one off courses that focus on one particular skill to develop. Group programs are important and crucial to a well rounded music education because these are skills that are difficult to develop in private lessons.

  1. Ensemble Skills: A student can only learn this with a group! Ensemble skills include balance, rhythm, active listening and so on.

  2. Team Building: Students often have to work towards a common goal and have to communicate with each other non-verbally

  3. Community & Social Interactions: Students get an opportunity to meet other students through group classes and create lifelong friendships with students who have similar interests

  4. Performance Skills: performing in front of others more frequently helps reduce stage fright and boost confidence

  5. Application of learned skills in private lessons: Group classes often replicate real-life situations in which students can apply learned skills from private instruction to group classes.

  6. Peer Motivation: Seeing classmates succeed encourages and inspires students to want to learn more and practice more frequently

The Perfect Combo: Group and Private lessons

In order to enrich or enhance your private instruction, group classes offer supplementary materials and education which can bolster your students musical education. This also provides an opportunity to study under another educator who may teach similar concepts that solidify private instruction
