Honoring a Legacy: Melody Mart’s Commitment to the Fight Against Brain Cancer

As a cornerstone of the Homewood community, Melody Mart has always been more than a music store; it's a symbol of passion and dedication. This dedication extends beyond music to a deeply personal cause that has touched our hearts profoundly. In honor of Olivia Kresach, the beloved daughter of Melody Mart's former owner, Dan Kresach, we are proudly participating in the 9th Annual BrainUp 5k Run/Walk on September 21st, 2024.

Olivia Kresach's story is one of courage and resilience. At just 22 years old, Olivia, a senior at the University of Illinois at Chicago, was a promising student majoring in nutrition. A dedicated member of the Chicago Dietetic Association and Vice President of the Student Nutrition Association, she was also a yoga instructor. Despite her bright future, Olivia faced a devastating diagnosis: glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. After a valiant fight, Olivia passed away in April 2014. Her legacy and her family’s unwavering commitment to finding a cure have inspired many, including us at Melody Mart.

In honor of Olivia’s memory and her parents' tireless efforts through the BrainUp foundation, we are mobilizing our community to support the upcoming 5k run/walk. BrainUp, established by Dan and Meg Kresach, is dedicated to funding research aimed at combating brain cancer and improving treatment options. This year’s event, held at Lake View Park, will see participants come together to raise awareness and funds for this crucial cause.

Melody Mart is more than just a music shop; it is a hub for community action and support. We are creating a team to participate in the 5k and contribute to BrainUp’s mission. Our goal is not just to honor Olivia’s memory but to make a tangible impact in the fight against brain cancer. We encourage everyone to join us, whether by running or walking, donating, or simply supporting our efforts in other ways.

Every step taken and every dollar raised brings us closer to a world where brain cancer is no longer a devastating diagnosis but a challenge we have overcome. Together, we can continue Olivia’s legacy and work towards a future where no family has to endure what the Kresachs have faced.
