Craig Buckner is a drummer, educator, and businessman. He graduated from DePaul University Chicago with an M.M. in Jazz Studies in 2021. Throughout his studies in music, he has always had an attraction to music education and sought out any and all teaching opportunities available. Craig has been teaching at Melody Mart for six years, bringing his expertise and passion to students of all ages.
Craig Buckner is a drummer, educator, and businessman with over 10 years of experience in music education and performance. Craig Buckner has also had his various transcriptions featured in the well-known Chicago-based jazz magazine, DownBeat. During the weekdays, he works on the National Supply Chain Team at Corporate ALDI, and in his free time, he’s a music educator, jazz drummer, and musical theatre drummer/percussionist.
Craig began his musical journey at around eight years old, starting on a junior-sized drum set in his garage. Over the years, he has performed in various jazz groups, big bands, and large musical theatre productions across Chicago. His transcriptions have been featured in the Chicago-based jazz magazine, DownBeat. His teaching philosophy centers on making a positive impact on his students' lives and careers, emphasizing that students learn best when they are interested and having fun. Craig’s teaching motto is simply “PRACTICE!” and he adopts a relaxed and enjoyable approach to teaching.
In his role at Melody Mart, Craig teaches a range of genres including rock, funk, jazz, and Latin. He believes in creating a positive and supportive learning atmosphere, where students feel comfortable and motivated. Craig holds the philosophy of preparing students for success by sharing the experience and knowledge gained through years of practice and performance.
One of Craig’s most memorable moments at Melody Mart was surprising a student with a brand new drum set, which was purchased by the student's mother. The joy and surprise on the student's face made it a particularly rewarding experience. Notable successes among his students include those who have advanced to college music programs, passed auditions for school drum lines and jazz bands, and performed regularly with their own bands.
