Meet Davis Young

Davis Young has 20 years of experience with the piano and 15 years with percussion. He teaches percussion, piano, and music theory at Melody Mart, where his musical journey began at age 5 with the piano and expanded to percussion at age 10. Inspired to share his extensive musical experiences, Davis teaches to connect with others through music.

His favorite book is "Oh, the Places You’ll Go" by Dr. Seuss.

Professionally, Davis has played various instruments, including the piano and a range of percussion instruments such as the drumset, marimba, xylophone, timpani, snare, and bass drum. Melody Mart holds a special place in his heart as it marks the beginning of his music career, with participating in recitals being particularly memorable. His formal education includes coursework at Indiana University, where he actively participated in several collegiate music ensembles. Currently, he is part of an instructor-led band.

While classically trained, Davis draws inspiration from artists like Earth, Wind & Fire and Kendrick Lamar, with a particular interest in funk. Teaching music felt like a natural extension of his passion for helping people and connecting through this universal language. He finds joy in witnessing his students grasp new concepts, validating their learning progress, and he enjoys learning new ideas from them.

Davis' teaching philosophy centers on the belief that music, while patterned to simplify learning, is a fluid and creative endeavor. He acknowledges that learning music is a process, but with time, students can integrate their ideas into musical creations. His teaching motto, "You’ll always leave this lesson learning something!" reflects his commitment to continuous learning.

Striving to be approachable and relatable, Davis encourages students to feel comfortable. He connects teaching material with the music his students are interested in and incorporates their questions into lessons. Emphasizing ear training, he helps students recognize pitch and is flexible in teaching any genre his students wish to learn. He requires students to bring their music books and a positive attitude to lessons.

Davis has had several student success stories, including performances at siblings' graduations and personal concerts for family. Many of his original students continue to pursue music. In addition to teaching, he enjoys playing the drumset and harmonica and engaging in composition.
