Gary Weisenberger has been a part of the Melody Mart family since 2017. With a Bachelor of Music Education (BME) from Illinois Wesleyan University and 15 years of teaching experience, Gary has an extensive background in music. He began playing music at the age of 10 and has since played numerous instruments.
Gary has participated in various musical ensembles and performance groups, including the Homewood Flossmoor Community Band, The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps Alumni Band, and The River Valley Wind Ensemble. His musical influences are primarily rooted in classical and jazz genres.
Gary's teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that music is for everyone. His motto is, "Music is for everyone. Love what you do and do what you love." He keeps students' individual goals in mind and ensuring that lessons always include a balance of fundamentals, sight-reading, challenging pieces, and fun music. He believes that the day it stops being fun is when students stop learning.
One of Gary's proudest moments as a teacher is seeing the excitement in his students towards their music. A particularly memorable success story is one of his oldest students who moved to the east coast but continues to send him recordings to update him on his progress. Gary recommends Essential Elements for Band for younger students, Rubank Advanced Method for older woodwinds, and The Arban's Book for brass players.
"Melody Mart has been an iconic part of Homewood for decades and is a valuable part of the community with plenty to do beyond just music lessons. There is truly something for everyone here." Students should bring their instrument, necessary supplies, book or music, and a great attitude to lessons. A particularly memorable moment for him was the recent open house at Melody Mart.
Gary teaches a wide range of instruments to students aged 8 and older, including adult learners. His instruction covers woodwinds such as flute, Bb clarinet, and saxophone; brass instruments like French horn, trumpet, trombone, baritone, euphonium, and tuba. Gary Weisenberger looks forward to meeting and working with students to achieve their musical goals.
