Raven Huang (they/them) is a dedicated multi-instrumentalist with a deep passion for contemporary and new music. They primarily play the viola, violin, guitar, and ukulele, and have been a valuable member of the Melody Mart team in their short time here. Raven also teaches at the Chicago Metamorphosis Orchestra Project and performs regularly with the Chicago Composers Orchestra and the Pour Clara Collective. In addition to their musical endeavors, Raven owns a houseplant pop-up shop called Doodles & Dandelions.
Raven holds a B.A. in Music and a Certificate in Music for Social Change and Human Values from North Park University, with three years of teaching experience. They began their musical journey with singing and piano at the age of three and continued formal piano lessons until age 11. After a hiatus, Raven started playing viola at 14. Their teaching philosophy centers on creating inclusive spaces where students feel they belong and are supported, using diverse methods tailored to individual needs. They prioritize building strong relationships with students and their families, emphasizing the importance of empathy and positive reinforcement in the learning process.
Raven’s approach to teaching is characterized by flexibility and responsiveness. They use various methods, including note reading, visual aids, and peer learning, to engage students and address their specific needs. Raven believes that music education extends beyond learning an instrument; it’s about using music to understand and connect with the world. They are committed to meeting students where they are and fostering their growth both as musicians and individuals.
Outside of music, Raven enjoys cross-stitching, Dungeons & Dragons, gardening, and spending time with their dog, Macchiato. They are fluent in conversational Taishanese and can understand and read Spanish, though they are still working on improving their Spanish-speaking skills. Raven’s most memorable experience at Melody Mart includes meaningful conversations with folks about the essence of music and art. Their mission is to instill compassion and a lifelong love for the arts in their students, drawing from their rich experiences growing up in Chicago’s Chinatown neighborhood and their appreciation for the city’s diverse music scene.
