Ukulele Vibe Social: An Intentional Ukulele Space

Our Ukulele Vibe Social is where music meets connection! This community hour is designed to celebrate the joy of learning and playing the ukulele. This space invites you to bring your interests to shape our sessions together.

My own ukulele journey started with a combination of group classes, practicing together with peers, and self-teaching from videos and online resources. Ukulele Vibe Circle is more than a group class– it’s an intentional space where people can connect over playing the ukulele. No matter where you are on your musical journey, we welcome you as you are. Especially if you’ve never played a ukulele before and want to try it for fun– we’d love to have you! All ages and skill levels are welcome.

What do we do in Ukulele Vibe Circle?

Here are some topics we explore together:

  • Ukulele’s history and its cultural impact

  • How to read ukulele tablature and chord diagrams

  • Different genres of ukulele music

  • Strumming and fingerstyle playing

  • How to practice in a healthy way

  • Peer learning, collaboration, and group practice

  • And much more :)

Who am I?

Hi! I’m Raven. I’m a jack of all trades and have explored hundreds of different interests— which is something I’ve had to grow into loving about myself.

My musical background has led me down many paths throughout my life. I currently play viola and ukulele. In the past, I have explored piano, violin, guitar, and songwriting. I love playing new compositions and music that discusses current cultural events and social justice topics.

My teaching philosophy centers around creating a supportive space for students to connect with their inner-selves, curiosities, and intuitive abilities. Playing an instrument requires learning many skills, and it’s a fine balance between baby steps forward and big challenging leaps. I try to see things from my students’ perspectives when it comes to learning their instruments.

How I Teach

At the very core, I will always meet students where they are at. I feel strongly that students are the best assessors of their own progress, and it’s my role to nurture that ability. I often describe my teaching approach as providing students with a “toolbox” because many of my students bring different skill levels and experiences with them when we work together. I try my best to personalize music, what skills I teach, and more to each individual student. I try to find music from movies, musicals, and pop culture when I can. I love highlighting how art and music exist around us in our daily lives.

That said, I’ve always been a big advocate for doing your own research and learning ukulele on your own. So when students bring in videos they’ve discovered or started learning from, they become topics we cover in future classes!

Why do I do this?

I teach this class because I want people to be able to learn an instrument at their own pace, without feeling judged or intimidated. I strongly believe there is a way to build high level skills on your instrument while still keeping music fun and fulfilling.

Learning an instrument can sometimes be intimidating or frustrating– I’ve been there! If I can be honest and share something deeper: enduring a “’classical” music school education, for me, felt like fighting a wild monster. The experience strained the relationship I had with my art and pulled a lot of generational trauma up to the surface. I had to reflect a lot on the things I struggled with as a student, including perfectionism, burnout, and the pressure to succeed.

I am actively trying to relearn how to play my instrument and remember why I fell in love with playing music.

I teach and play music because it is healing magic. I strongly believe that music and art are powerful tools that provide spaces for healing, storytelling, and reconnecting with our truest inner-selves.

Does it cost anything?

The Ukulele Vibe Circle offers valuable skills at an accessible cost. If you are a part of the Private Instruction Program or the Group Instruction Program, it is included in your package! (Tips are optional but we appreciate you always!) For those who are looking to casually drop in, the program fee is $20.

Last Thoughts

One of my favorite ukulele artists, Jake Shimabukuro says that “if everyone played the ukulele, the world would be a better place.” My heart says that there is no wrong way to play the ukulele. If you are having fun while doing it and it brings you joy, then you are exactly where you need to be. Music can heal broken hearts, and give us a space to be present with each other in this moment. I hope that is what people feel after attending our ukulele vibe circle.
